In times of emergency, the suffering of companion animals is often overlooked. We saw this in New Orleans a year ago. Now, the conflict between Israel and Lebanon has put many animals in the line of fire. There are heroic efforts underway to relieve their plight.
Hakol Chai, an Israeli Humane Society, led an animal rescue operation in Northern Israel to save starving and dehydrated cats and dogs. “Some residents left their cats and dogs behind when they evacuated, believing they would return soon. In other cases, animals fled the sound of missiles, became disoriented, and lost their way. Without food and water, they are desperate for help.”
The International Fund for Animal Welfare is supporting organizations on both sides of the border. In Lebanon, BETA (Bierut for The Ethical Treatment of Animals) is setting up shelters for abandoned pets and organizing rescue operations. In Israel, Noah, the umbrella organization of animal welfare organizations is working hard to care for animals in need.
